Workshop
Drama in drawing
Sunday workshop, February 2025
Let's put back drama in drawing!
(Course level: intermediate and advanced)
Take up your playbooks, summon the cast and get the lighting guys to work! We will leave the realm of flat stereotypes and raise the curtain for a stage full of shadow and light. We let our characters' natures reveal themselves in the gloomy set that we prepare. Monsters, heroes, kings and queens: It's all there, waiting in the wings of your imagination.

What we’ll do
This workshop is about drawing pronounced renderings with imagined light sources. Sketches of figures, objects and situations can become quite impressive when being staged that way. We will start out by drawing up a set of characters and items in a manner that you are familiar and comfortable with.
Light and shadow
In a next step, those drawings will get a pencil examination as to their appearance in an assumed lighting scenario. I will demonstrate the process and explain the thinking. You just need to be imaginative and put on an attitude of relaxed boldness. Of course, Lotte and I will closely monitor your exploits and provide help with the little drawing issues that most certainly will occur. We will talk about things like form, proper layering, first and secondary shadows and why they are all part of the game, which, as you will find out, is mostly fun!
Dramatic light
When you have had enough of simple renderings, we'll look at preparing tiny scenarios, where we can see the full power of this little thing called dramatic light. See you backstage!
